It was assumed that buyers had controllers from their previously purchased PS2s and would simply swap out the consoles. A standard USB keyboard can also be used in this way. The user interface is an early version of the XMB menu system later featured on PS3. However, some PS2 accessories such as the multi-tap are not compatible with PSX.

When turned on, it defaults to seeking on air analog TV signals which of course fails. To play games or DVDs marketed outside of Japan, the console must be region unlocked, which involves some software-based workarounds. This system is tested working and in pristine condition with all original accessories. YouTube and GitHub sites provide guidance on these techniques.

The consoles XMB interface is in Japanese by default and there no official setting to change the language English.
